The Creation of Educare
John O. Whiteman was the driving force behind the creation and construction of Educare Arizona, a world-class facility for teaching preschool children in the Balsz Elementary School district in Phoenix. John chaired the board of Educare, which raised the $11.3 million, then he and others worked with the board and Southwest Human Development to operate the center. One of the goals of establishing Educare was to affect early education public policy for the state of Arizona.
Some of the notable achievements of the Whiteman Foundation have been the creation of the Whiteman Tennis Center at ASU, the Whiteman Hall at the Phoenix Art Museum, the building of a girls’ dormitory at Sunshine Acres Orphanage in Mesa, a room at the Desert Botanical Garden, and Educare Arizona in Phoenix.
What is Educare
Educare Arizona is a world-class educational child care process under way in the Valley, for which the Whiteman Foundation is a co-founder and co-anchor founder. Educare is a national initiative dedicated to ensuring children from before birth to age 5, principally from low-income families, can overcome their specific challenges and enter kindergarten ready to succeed.
The science is clear: Children who are “at risk” but have access to high-quality care and education during their first five years are more likely to develop the skills necessary to succeed in school and life. The foundation also maintains that it is far more cost effective to help children and families build healthy foundations early than to treat problems later in life.
The Educare Arizona Center provides high-quality early care and education to over 200 infants, toddlers and preschoolers from low-income families. The network seeks to shape a new way of doing business when it comes to delivering early care and education to our nation’s most at-risk children and families. The Educare Arizona Center strives to serve as a catalyst for broader change throughout its community and state.
The Educare movement is led by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, Ounce of Prevention Fund, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Kaiser Family Foundation, and public-private partners in communities across America. Click here to learn more about Educare.
